You should be able to apply basic temporary criteria to your viewing results to say maybe "filter for files with the tag "my-dog" and file type. You might be already viewing one of these smart folders or maybe you are viewing a traditional folder. In addition to the above idea of a "smart folder" - it would also be very useful to be able to filter the files that you are viewing at any given time. So maybe you write in the tags "my-dog" but then also tell it not to show you images that you've tagged as "me" since you're looking for images without you in them, but with the dog. Now you could have a "smart folder" - a folder that does not necessarily need to exist within the file structure- but rather you feed this folder a set of tags and it displays all files on the filesystem matching said parameters. Assuming you tagged every picture with your dog with a tag "my-dog" (an automated tagging solution could be built but lets worry about the fundamentals first) However say you'd like to quickly view all photos where your dog appears. Your file structure might look as follows These smart folders would allow you to view directories of files that do not necessarily follow the file structure of your dataset. In Finder/Windows Explorer/Gnome Files you could have "smart folders" by using tags (think of how a smart album works in macOS photos if anyone is familiar) These tags would be included in ZFS-send/ZFS-recieve operations, these tags would be viewable by clients connecting via either SMB/NFS.
